TMU Passes ISO 14064-1 Certification and Pledges Net Zero Target for Sustainability

Taipei Medical University is committed to cultivating medical and biotechnology talents with cultural
humanistic care, capacity for innovation, and international perspectives and actively links university affairs
with United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). TMU has set its sustainable development goals
on the basis of environmental sustainability, social innovation, and campus governance. It focuses on ESG and
international biomedicine issues to support global sustainability trends and become a world class medical
university.
TMU actively took climate actions to respond to the impact of climate change, including the activation of
ISO 14064-1 annual greenhouse gas inventory of TMU campuses in June 2022. It passed third-party
certification by the British Standards Institution (BSI) in August and organized the net zero pledge and ISO
14064-1 certification ceremony in the administrative meeting today (October 4).
According to the inventory certification report, the greenhouse gas emissions of TMU's Xinyi campus in
2022 totaled 11,364.873 tons, of which 93.16% were carbon emissions derived from electricity demand. TMU
President Mai-Szu Wu stated that climate change has become a common issue for the world. As a medical and
education system with one university and six hospitals, TMU must share the burden of reducing carbon
emissions, attaining net zero emissions, and mitigating the impact of climate change. After passing ISO 14064-
1 certification, TMU set a target for reducing carbon emissions by 40% by 2030 and attaining net zero
emissions by 2045. The pledge was made in the university-level administrative meeting to demonstrate TMU's
resolve for attaining net zero emissions.
Director Chia-Lun Chang of the British Standards Institution (BSI) stated that he was very glad to witness
TMU's voluntary promotion of environmental sustainability and advancement in the progress toward net zero
emissions even though TMU is not required to do so by the competent authority. He encourages TMU to adopt
digital smart platform management to support sustainable development and net zero emissions and hopes that
TMU can cultivate more talents for sustainability and social development through humanistic care and high-
quality education in the green revolution and create its own circular economy.

TMU Vice President and Chief Sustainability Officer Jan-Show Chu stated that after verifying the
greenhouse gas emissions, the next step is to formulate carbon reduction plans according to the Science-Based
Targets (SBTs) and apply to join the Race to net zero campaign of the United Nations. In addition to replacing
old major energy equipment and increasing energy efficiency, TMU will also promote green office/laboratory
certification with reference to the Laboratory Efficiency and Assessment Framework of the United Kingdom to
increase environmental awareness and foster changes in the actions of the faculty and students. The 2022
Sustainable Development Report published by TMU also obtained third-party certification statement and TMU
will fully disclose its progress on environmental targets and action plans in the Report to enhance
communication with stakeholders.

In addition, TMU applied for the 2023 "Smart Climate Friendly Campus Program" of the Ministry of
Education and obtained qualification for the Basic and Demonstration Program. It became one of the
demonstration colleges and universities in Taiwan and will use the results of the ISO 14064-1 inventory as the
basis along with the ISO 50001 Energy Management System standards to enhance the energy management
system analysis and smart control functions and create a smart climate friendly campus. TMU will also provide
access to campus environmental data and use relevant environmental issues as topics as well as unique regional
and campus characteristics to provide systematic and comprehensive campus courses and actively attain
sustainable development of the campus.
