Dean Pei-Shan Tsai: TMU College of Nursing Creates a Model for Community-Based Sustainable Care

Facing the global challenges of aging populations and caregiver shortages, TMU’s College of Nursing launched the Phase IV University Social Responsibility (USR) Project, centered on community co-creation, caregiver empowerment, and smart care. This initiative integrates education with field practice to address public resource gaps and foster sustainable community-based care through interdisciplinary collaboration and technology.

The project includes four key programs: smart home safety, elder-friendly long-term care, caregiver support, and intergenerational engagement. Technologies such as assistive devices, virtual reality (VR), AI-powered consultation systems, and online support platforms have enhanced health literacy and quality of life for elders and caregivers while nurturing students with sustainable and action-oriented care competencies.

Over 800 students from 18 departments have participated, collaborating with more than 10 local communities in Taipei and New Taipei City. Through real-world engagement, students gain empathy, social responsibility, and practical problem-solving skills.

To measure outcomes, the College applies Social Return on Investment (SROI), achieving a score of 2.72 in 2024, reflecting significant social impact in aging-in-place, intergenerational initiatives, dementia-friendly actions, and elder-friendly environments.

Looking forward, the College will continue advancing elder safety, caregiver support, hospice advocacy, and community-based aging networks. By combining AI, modular sustainability curricula, and field practice, TMU Nursing is expanding its model across communities, proving that education extends beyond classrooms—and that sustainable care takes root through real-world action.
