The International Hospital Federation (IHF) recently announced the finalists for the 2026 IHF Awards at the World Hospital Congress. From over 750 entries submitted by institutions across 38 countries and regions worldwide, 59 entries advanced to the finals. Taiwan had 5 entries from 4 hospitals reach the finals this year, and 3 of those entries came from the Taipei Medical University (TMU) Healthcare System — the most of any healthcare system in Taiwan. Shuang Ho Hospital alone earned finalist status in two award categories, once again demonstrating the international competitiveness of the TMU Healthcare System in hospital governance, low-carbon healthcare, and sustainable development.

The IHF Awards are among the most prestigious international honors in hospital management worldwide, covering areas such as hospital governance, healthcare quality, patient safety, operations management, staff wellbeing, low-carbon healthcare, social responsibility, and sustainable development. Considered a major honor within the global healthcare community, the 2026 awards will be presented in late October at the World Hospital Congress.

Shuang Ho Hospital and Wan Fang Hospital are both finalists in the 2026 IHF Awards.

The three finalist entries from the TMU Healthcare System span the categories of leadership and management, low-carbon healthcare, and social and environmental responsibility. Shuang Ho Hospital's "1 Department, 1 ESG" management model is a finalist in the Leadership & Management category, turning every clinical and administrative unit into an active participant in sustainability governance and driving simultaneous improvement in healthcare quality, operational efficiency, and environmental responsibility.

Another finalist entry, "Green Nephrology: Low-Carbon Treatment for Kidney Diseases," is competing in the Low-Carbon Healthcare category. By optimizing kidney care processes, the initiative reduces carbon emissions and healthcare costs while maintaining care quality, creating a new model that balances patient health outcomes with environmental sustainability. Wan Fang Hospital's "Towards Net Zero 2050" initiative is a finalist in the Social & Environmental Responsibility category, showcasing concrete results in the hospital's net-zero transition.

TMU President Mai-Szu Wu stated that amid a super-aged society, extreme climate change, and a rapidly evolving healthcare landscape, a hospital's mission extends beyond providing high-quality medical care — it also carries the responsibility of protecting public health and advancing sustainable development. He emphasized that the real challenge is not only meeting today's healthcare needs, but building a system capable of caring for future generations. Sustainability, he noted, is not pursued for the sake of competitions or awards, but achieved through continuous management innovation, process optimization, and medical innovation that steadily improve care quality and build a safer, more resilient healthcare environment — ensuring better care can be sustained across generations.

The advancement of three entries to the IHF Awards finals affirms the TMU Healthcare System's sustained investment in smart healthcare, sustainability governance, and medical innovation over the years, and reflects Taiwan healthcare's continued international recognition. Going forward, the TMU Healthcare System will continue to drive healthcare development through innovation, respond to global challenges through sustainability, and safeguard community health through resilience — partnering with international peers to build a safer, smarter, and more sustainable healthcare environment, showcasing Taiwan to the world and reaffirming the TMU Healthcare System's ongoing influence in leading the future of healthcare and care innovation.
