What began at Taipei Medical University (TMU) soon reached classrooms across Taiwan, as 406 overseas youth volunteers from 20 countries transformed their language skills, cultural perspectives, and enthusiasm into meaningful educational service.
After completing a week of intensive preparation at TMU, the volunteers traveled to 66 primary and junior high schools across Taiwan, where they spent two weeks working in classrooms, leading interactive activities and building connections with students and communities.
Their journey demonstrates how thoughtful preparation can turn a short-term volunteer experience into a platform for learning, service, and cross-cultural exchange.
Where Global Service Began
The volunteers participated in the 2026 English Teaching Volunteer Service Program for Overseas Youth, jointly organized by the Overseas Community Affairs Council, the Ministry of Education, and the Hakka Affairs Council.
The program brings together overseas youth with a shared interest in education, community service, and connecting with Taiwan. As one of the program’s partnering institutions, TMU served as the starting point of this year’s journey, providing the environment and training to prepare participants for their placements.
During their first week, volunteers participated in an intensive training program that combined instructional preparation, practical teaching activities, team development, intercultural learning, and service education. The training helped participants strengthen their confidence, understand local classroom contexts, and prepare activities suited to students of different ages and learning needs.
Before the official training, TMU also hosted an orientation session for instructional facilitators, allowing them to become familiar with the program, campus environment, and service objectives.
From Preparation to Cross-Cultural Connection
Effective teaching requires more than language proficiency. Volunteers also need to communicate across cultures, collaborate with local teachers and team members, adapt to different classroom environments, and design activities that encourage student participation.
Through the week-long training and group-based practice at TMU, participants learned how to transform English lessons into engaging experiences centered on communication, creativity, and interaction. This preparation helped them enter their placements not only as English instructors, but also as cultural ambassadors ready to share their own perspectives and learn from the communities.
Turning Global Perspectives into Local Impact
By supporting the program with its educational resources and campus environment, TMU helped equip 406 overseas youth volunteers to contribute to classrooms and communities across Taiwan.
The program reflects TMU’s continued commitment to youth engagement, intercultural learning, and international exchange. More importantly, it shows how global perspectives can be translated into local impact, empowering young people to connect communities, inspire learning, and carry their experiences with Taiwan to the world.
